Cloudflare is most well-known as a Content Delivery Network (CDN). Its stated mission: To help build a better Internet. Since its founding in 2009, it has grown past that and offers a range of services, mostly covering security, performance, and reliability.

Cloudflare powers around 15%+ of all websites currently in existence. In 2022, Builtwith.com shows that over 13m websites worldwide are using Cloudflare. Some of its customer includes popular brands such as CNN, New York Times, and Grammarly.

Popular alternatives to Cloudflare include Akamai and Fastly. Users in the ultra-high-traffic segment tend to prefer Akamai. Whereas Cloudflare focuses more on cloud network traffic and enterprise-wide security. Meanwhile, Fastly focuses more on the granular application layer and API security.

Keep in mind that if you plan to use Cloudflare, your site still needs web hosting service provider to hold and serve the files that make up your site.

ISSUES WITH Cloudflare IN CHINA

Cloudflare does not have its own CDNs in China, and must rely on a 3rd party provider to provide its Cloudflare China Network.

The Cloudflare China Network is available as a separate subscription for customers on an Enterprise plan.

Cloudflare users without a separate China subscription (like Digicert shown below) can expect slow and unstable performance in China.
